  • Window box garden

It's not quite finished, but here's what we've got so far.  Our original plan would have extended further to allow more clearance of each box.  Because of space we had to shorten it.  I'll plant thyme or something in the back.  You get the idea.  We used pine for the boxes.  Hubby had a problem with the price of cedar these days.

Here's the swiss chard after harvesting:

The broccoli is forming heads!  I thought we ruined it in the hoop house with too much warmth.

    That's pretty darned ingenious.

I'm not a Xanga person and I don't want to go through the trouble of registering, but if I was registered, you'd get the heart with the plus (highly recommend).

That box looks fantastic! Do you have plans to treat this pine in any way to keep it from rotting?

My broccoli is almost ready to harvest, but your heads look much nicer. My buds are really fat like they are going to go straight into blooming!

It just shows what you can grow in those boxes

Your husband is very clever . Those wooden boxes look great and I AM SURE YOU WILL BE DOING well with them .

The swiss chard loooks a bit like the red beets that I have in the garden ; I would have to check Google to know what it is .

    Cheryl:  Thanks!

Sylvana:  Thank you.  It's one way to expand the garden.  He's using a wood deck stain on it.  There's 2 bugle head screws on each side of the boxes holding them to the wood frame. The boxes can be replaced if they don't last.   We've read other people's projects using regular lumber and they've got about 6 good years from their raised beds, expecting to get a couple more.

If I hadn't lost my job I would have paid for cedar lumber myself.  As of June 30th I will be on unemployment.  We invested $70.00 in the boxes and would have spent twice that, easy, on cedar.  Just couldn't afford it right now.  I would also have left off the wood stain.

Our weather has been prime for cool season veg.  These plants got so big though that I was worried they weren't going to produce heads!!!  I'll have plenty of side shoots to share.

Juls:  I've used the plastic type for a long time and harvested a lot of veggies :)

Michel:  Thank you!  He's pleased with the results.  I can't wait to get my Fall garden started in July in them ;)

The swiss chard is in the beet family, as is spinach.  This "Bright Lights" chard has a good flavor and looks beautiful on a plate.  I think it has a better flavor than beet greens.  The leaf is much more tender for one thing.  I sliced the stems thin on a diagonal; chopped the leaves into a diced size and stir fried in olive oil and garlic.  I wish I had planted a lot more of this!

@primrozie - Amazing ! I can't wait to see a photo when you plant things in it !!! I really like the planter :) I did not realize you lost your job,Will you be able to return  when school starts again ? In the fall..It seems like everyone is getting hit with job loss ..Hope things turn around soon ! for everyone

Tess:  I'll have to see what space I have by mid July and what the weather is like.  Normally, mid July is when we start our Fall veggies.  If I have room in the raised beds I would rather plant those up first.  I think I'll keep salad greens and the bunching onions on the deck with my pots of herbs.  I still have so much to do.  Even plant.

We lost our contract to another company at work.  The new company said they want me to stay and do my job as it has been.  They pay less and we haven't talked about my hours being shortened like I wanted.  I suppose I should be grateful I've been offered the work.  I'm thinking about putting in one more year like I've been doing to make a good transition for the new company and school district ~ then go part time.  We can still manage the chickens and garden I guess.  I just end up with way too much to do.

My husband is concerned that the auto industry will continue to go down hill and he'll lose his job so we should hang on to mine.

Nam:  That is a good observation!  I did not think of that purpose.  The reason I will use the window box garden is to give me more place to plant vegetables.  I do not have a lot of land to grow vegetables.  Just a little.  I use large wooden boxes to grow my vegetables in the main garden.  You can see them in some of my pictures.

I think you will do good on your test.  You like to learn and you study.  If you sleep enough hours and eat the right food your brain will work best.  I found an article that talks about it.  I will post at your site.

Michel:  My husband is just worried about his job because the auto industry is having problems.  If he loses his job he will probably drive a truck.

We have a lot of coal mines in Pennsylvania.  Our electric companies burn coal to produce electricity.  I am happy that he is NOT a coal miner!!!!  It is dangerous work.

Michel:  the swiss chard is more like spinach leaf than beet green.  Softer leaf and mild flavor.  If you can't get the seed I would be happy to send you some.

Nam:  I like your new pictures.  Thank you for the nice comments.
I think the wooden boxes will work good to grow a lot of delicious vegetables.
I'm glad that you liked the information.

Neat box design--saves space & allows for quite  bit of plants.   I saw pics of my dd's garden on her my space and didn't even know she had palnted one. it's small, but quite productive and my heart swelled with pride when I saw it. Glad to have taught her something productive growing up. *hugs*

Pam:  I know the feeling!  My daughter went from city girl to "Urban Sustainable Living Girl".  She teased me about squarefoot gardening and getting chickens ~ now she's goin green and doin it all! But she's still in the city.  Lol.  Kudos to the daughters!
